Addictions Ontario and the Ontario Federation of Community Mental Health and Addiction Programs congratulates the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) for the leadership they demonstrated when issuing their statement supporting the Federal Government's Drug Treatment Funding Program (DTFP).
The membership of Addictions Ontario and the Ontario Federation of Community Mental Health Programs represent the full spectrum of treatment and community support service providers, who work collaboratively with their colleagues from education, harm reduction, enforcement and justice across the province to better help people coping with an addiction.
United we represent a comprehensive approach to addressing the issue of substance abuse in our communities. All too often law enforcement is narrowly perceived solely in the context of responding to the problems rather than being a proactive part of the solution or the prevention of substance abuse.
The remarks made by CACP Chair, Barry MacKnight eloquently conveyed the message that Police Chiefs understand the depth and complexity of the issues facing communities, as well as their compassion for the individuals and families who are battling addiction.
We would like to thank the CACP for shining light onto the issue of substance abuse from a perhaps unexpected angle and for lending their voices to the resounding need to address substance abuse with a holistic and comprehensive approach.
